The Golden Light Route
8-Day Morocco Photography Tour: Marrakech to Fes
Eight days from Marrakech to Fes, built backwards from the light
- 8 days · 7 nights
- Marrakech → Fes
- About 20 hours over 8 days, timed to the harsh hours. driving
Most tours move you between places at exactly the hours when photography is worst: leaving at nine, arriving at four, standing in flat midday sun. This inverts it. We drive during the harsh hours and stand still during the good ones. Dawn at Ait Ben Haddou, the dunes an hour before anyone else is awake, the Milky Way over Erg Chebbi, and the Fes tanneries at the one hour of the morning when the vats have light in them. Long midday breaks for sleeping and backing up. Bring whatever you own, including a phone. This is about position and timing, not gear.
Why I run it this wayEvery day is scheduled around sunrise and the last hour, not around opening times. I shoot as well as drive, so I know where to stand and when to be there.
The things worth stopping for
- Every location timed to golden hour or blue hour
- Dawn at Ait Ben Haddou and sunrise on the Erg Chebbi crests, ahead of everyone
- Desert astrophotography under some of the darkest skies in North Africa
- Rooftop access over the Chouara tannery at the right hour
- Portrait sessions arranged with permission and time, not stolen from the hip
- Midday downtime built in for editing and backing up
Where this trip takes you
Straight lines between stops, not the exact roads — the driving is the winding version of this.
