Fes to Marrakech, Four Days

The crossing run north to south, with a morning that belongs to the desert

  • 4 days · 3 nights
  • Fes → Marrakech
  • About 22 hours over 4 days. driving

Four days is the shortest version of this crossing that does not feel like a race. Day one runs over the Middle Atlas and down the Ziz to the dunes. Day two is the one the three-day tours do not have: sunrise on the crests, a morning out on the black rock among nomad families and the Gnawa musicians of Khamlia, and time to sit still. Then west through the gorges and over the Atlas. It is the trip I recommend most often to first-time visitors with a short window.

Why I run it this way

The fourth day buys you a full desert morning instead of a scramble back to the van at eight. That single change is the difference between seeing the Sahara and being in it.

What you'll see

The things worth stopping for

  • Ifrane, the cedar forest and the macaques on the way south
  • The Ziz valley palm corridor, driven in daylight
  • A full desert morning: Khamlia Gnawa music, nomad camps, the seasonal lake
  • Sunset and sunrise both, from the dunes
  • Todra and Dades without hurrying either
  • Ait Ben Haddou with time to climb to the granary at the top

Questions

Questions about this route

How long is the drive from Fes to Merzouga?

About 8 hours with stops — the longest day of the trip. After that the days get shorter: around 5 hours to Dades and 7 to Marrakech.

How much does the Fes to Marrakech desert tour cost?

$540–$730 per person. The lower figure assumes four sharing, the upper assumes two.

Can this be done in three days?

Yes, but you lose the unhurried morning in the dunes. Four days is the version I'd choose.
