Ait Ben Haddou
Ait Ben Haddou is usually the first proper kasbah people see on the road south, and it's easy to understand why film crews keep coming back to it. The earthen towers catch the light differently morning and evening, which is worth planning around.
Why this place stays with people
- Ksar Ait Ben Haddou (UNESCO)
- Earthen kasbah architecture
- Film-set history
- River crossing on foot
Early morning or late afternoon light is best for photos, and cooler for the walk up. Workable most of the year.
It's a stop on the way to the desert, not a destination on its own — plan an hour or so, more if you want to climb to the top for the view.
Your guide to Ait Ben Haddou
Worth seeing
- The walk up through the fortified village to the old granary at the top
- The view over the Ounila river and the desert beyond
- Streets you may recognise from Gladiator and Game of Thrones
Good to know
- Come early in the morning or late in the afternoon for softer light and fewer groups.
- Paths inside are steep and uneven. Wear proper shoes.
- A few families still live inside and may ask a small fee to show you their house.
- Stay the night nearby and you have the village almost to yourself at dusk.

You can, but it's around 8 hours of driving in a day. It's much better as a stop on the way to the desert, or with a night nearby so you see it in the evening light.

Walking into the ksar itself is free. Some families charge a small fee to go inside their houses or up onto a roof for the view.
