Merzouga and Erg Chebbi

Merzouga is the usual gateway to the dunes. The moment the road flattens and the sand starts rising beside it, the whole trip changes pace.

Visitor guide

Your guide to Merzouga

How long to stay One night at least. Two if you want a full day out in the dunes.
Getting there About 560 km from Marrakech, usually split with a night in the Dades Valley. From Fes it is about 470 km through the Middle Atlas.

Worth seeing

  1. Sunset and sunrise on the dunes of Erg Chebbi
  2. A night at a camp in the dunes, with the stars and no city light
  3. Gnawa music in the village of Khamlia
  4. The seasonal lake of Dayet Srji, when it has water (sometimes flamingos)

Good to know

  • The camel ride out to camp takes about an hour to an hour and a half. If you'd rather not ride, we go by 4x4.
  • Climb the high dunes early. By midday the sand is hot and the light is flat.
  • Summer days are very hot. Spring and autumn are the easiest months.
  • Bring a head torch. Camps are dark at night, which is exactly the point.
Questions

Planning a visit to Merzouga

How far is Merzouga from Marrakech?

About 560 km. Straight through it's roughly 9 hours of driving, which is why on the way out I split it over two days — a night in the Dades Gorges, then the dunes. Coming back to Marrakech in one go is about 9 hours.

Can I visit Merzouga in two days from Marrakech?

Not in a way I'd recommend — it's around 18 hours of driving for one night in the dunes. Three days is the minimum for Merzouga. If two days is all you have, Zagora is the realistic desert trip: about 7 hours each way, all paved.

What's the best time of year for Merzouga?

March to May and September to November are the most comfortable. Summer days go well above 40°C, so we plan early starts and long shady lunches. Winter days are pleasant, but nights at camp are cold — bring warm layers.

Do I have to ride a camel to reach the desert camp?

No. The camel ride out is usually around an hour and most people enjoy it, but if you'd rather not, camps can be reached by 4x4. Just tell me when we plan.

Merzouga or Erg Chigaga — which should I choose?

Merzouga's dunes at Erg Chebbi are taller and it's reached on paved road, so it fits a 3-day trip. Erg Chigaga is wilder and quieter, but the last stretch is off-road and it needs about 5 days from Marrakech. First trip and short on time: Merzouga.
