The Berber Heartland Loop

Seven days out of Marrakech and back, without repeating a road

  • 7 days · 6 nights
  • Marrakech → Marrakech
  • About 28 hours over 7 days. driving

Most Marrakech round trips are an out-and-back with the same scenery twice. This one loops: south over the Atlas through the Ounila valley, east along the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs to the Dades and Todra, out to Erg Chebbi for two nights, then west through Rissani and the black volcanic country to the Draa valley and back over the pass. You get inside two kasbahs with the people who look after them, which is a different experience from photographing the outside.

Why I run it this way

A complete southern circuit that closes on itself. Down through the gorges, across to the dunes, back up the Draa, so the only road you see twice is the Tichka.

What you'll see

The things worth stopping for

  • A true loop, with almost no repeated road
  • Inside both Telouet and Tamnougalt kasbahs, with their caretakers
  • The Monkey Fingers rock formations in the Dades
  • Two nights at Erg Chebbi with a full desert day
  • Rissani's souk on the old Sijilmassa caravan site
  • The Draa valley palm ribbon and the Tizi n'Tinififft pass
The route

Where this trip takes you

Straight lines between stops, not the exact roads — the driving is the winding version of this.
