Nomad Tracks and Golden Dunes

Five days out of Marrakech, gorges and Sahara, nothing rushed

  • 5 days · 4 nights
  • Marrakech → Marrakech
  • About 24 hours over 5 days, no single day above 7. driving

The southern circuit at its natural length, and the version I would book myself if I had five days. Two nights in the desert with a full day between them, the Skoura palm grove and the Rose Valley that the short tours drive past, and a return through the Draa rather than back the way you came. N'Kob, with its skyline of forty-five mud towers, gets a stop, and Ait Ben Haddou gets an overnight so you see it at dawn rather than at noon with the coaches.

Why I run it this way

Five days is where the southern circuit stops being a shuttle. Same landmarks as the three-day, but nothing is skipped and no day is spent entirely in a seat.

What you'll see

The things worth stopping for

  • Two nights in the Sahara with a full free day between
  • The 4x4 desert day: nomad families, Khamlia Gnawa musicians, fossil beds
  • Skoura's 17th-century palmeraie and the Amridil kasbah
  • Todra and Dades, each given a morning
  • N'Kob and its skyline of forty-five mudbrick towers
  • A loop with almost no repeated road
  • No shopping detours unless you ask for one

Where this trip takes you

How the trip goes

  1. Day 1: Marrakech to Skoura

    Driving: About 5 hours

Over the Tichka, Ouarzazate and the Taourirt kasbah, then into Skoura's palm grove for Amridil. Night in a garden lodge among the palms.

  2. Day 2: Skoura to Merzouga via Dades and Todra

    Driving: About 6 hours

The Road of a Thousand Kasbahs, up into the Dades for the Monkey Fingers rock, then Todra's canyon. East to the dune edge for sunset tea and the first night at camp.

  3. Day 3: The desert, a full day

    Driving: About 2 hours local

Sunrise on the crests. A 4x4 circuit of the dunes: nomad families in their tents, Gnawa music in Khamlia, the fossil beds and the lake. Second sunset, second night at camp.

  4. Day 4: Merzouga to Agdz via Rissani and N'Kob

    Driving: About 6 hours

Rissani's souk on the site of the medieval caravan city of Sijilmassa, then west through black volcanic country to N'Kob and its mud towers. Night in the Draa valley at Agdz.

  5. Day 5: Agdz to Marrakech via Ait Ben Haddou

    Driving: About 5 hours

North up the river valley, Ait Ben Haddou walked before the crowds thicken, then the Tichka into Marrakech.
