The Valleys Below Toubkal
4-Day High Atlas Hiking Tour from Marrakech
Four days in the High Atlas on foot, ninety minutes from Marrakech
- 4 days · 3 nights
- Marrakech → Marrakech
- About 5 hours of driving over 4 days — the rest is walked. driving
Every other mountain route I run looks at the Atlas through a windscreen. This one gets out and walks into it. These are valley walks, not mountaineering: three to five hours a day on paths that people actually use to get between villages, with the van meeting us at the other end. No technical ground, no altitude to speak of, and nothing that needs equipment beyond boots that fit. You'll be in Berber villages that are ten minutes from a road and still feel a long way from one. That's the point of it.
Why I run it this wayI grew up in these mountains, so the route follows the paths people actually use rather than the ones on the trekking maps. We stop where there's someone to talk to.
The things worth stopping for
- Walking days that end in a village, not a car park
- The Tamatert pass on foot, with the van meeting us on the far side
- Walnut groves, terraced fields and the irrigation channels that feed them
- The Saturday market at Asni, which is for locals and not for us
Where this trip takes you
Straight lines between stops, not the exact roads — the driving is the winding version of this.
How the trip goes
-
Day 1: Into Imlil, and a first walk to find your legs
Driving: About 1.5 hoursOut of Marrakech after breakfast and into the mountains within the hour. We settle in at Imlil, then walk up to Aroumd in the afternoon — an hour and a half, gentle, mostly to see what the altitude feels like and to get a look at the valley you'll be in for the next three days.
-

Day 2: Over the Tamatert on foot
Driving: About 30 minutesThe full walking day. Up through the walnut groves and over the Tamatert pass, down the other side through villages built in terraces above the river. Four to five hours with a long stop for lunch. The van meets us at the bottom, so nothing has to be carried further than a day bag.
-
Day 3: Ourika, and water coming off the mountain
Driving: About 2 hoursEast into the Ourika valley. Depending on the season and how the legs are holding up, either the walk up to the Setti Fatma waterfalls or the road up to the Oukaïmeden plateau, which is empty and enormous outside the ski months. Both end with tea somewhere with a view.
-
Day 4: The Asni market, and back down
Driving: About 1.5 hoursIf it's a Saturday, the market at Asni first — a working mountain market, not a tourist one. Then the road down through the foothills and into Marrakech by early afternoon.

Questions about this route
Do we climb Mount Toubkal on this trip?
No — this route walks the valleys below Toubkal: villages, passes and terraces. Climbing the summit is a separate two-day trek with a mountain guide, and I can help arrange it.
How much walking is involved?
Most of each day is on foot at a comfortable pace, with only about 5 hours of driving in total. Normal fitness is enough.
