Tamegroute

Tamegroute is one of my favourite short stops in the south: potters still firing the green glaze the village is known for, a library of old manuscripts, and a covered ksar you walk through in near-darkness.

What stands out

Why this place stays with people

  • Green-glazed pottery workshops
  • Zaouia library of old manuscripts
  • Underground ksar passages
  • Palm grove setting
Best time to go

Any time outside high summer. Mornings are best for the workshops.

From the driver's seat

An hour or two is enough. It's easy to fit in on the way to or from Erg Chigaga.

Visitor guide

Your guide to Tamegroute

How long to stay About an hour.
Getting there About 20 minutes south of Zagora.

Worth seeing

  1. The workshops and kilns of the green-glazed pottery
  2. The old Quranic library and its manuscripts
  3. The covered, underground streets of the old village

Good to know

  • Buy the pottery straight from the workshop. You see it made, and the potter gets the money.
  • The library asks a small entry fee or donation.
  • The underground passages are dark and low. Mind your head.
