Surf, Argan and the Atlantic
5-Day Taghazout Surf Coast Tour from Agadir
Five days on the surf coast north of Agadir, at the pace the sea sets
- 5 days · 4 nights
- Agadir → Agadir
- About 8 hours over 5 days. Short hops, mostly coastal. driving
The coast north of Agadir is the reason a lot of people come to Morocco at all, and it's the one part of the country I hadn't written up. This isn't a surf camp. It's a driving trip along a coastline that happens to have very good waves on it, with a lesson booked if you want one and a board in the van if you already know what you're doing. In between: an argan cooperative that's a real one, a palm gorge with pools cold enough to hurt, and fish grilled on the quay at Imsouane an hour after it was landed. Good all year. Cooler and windier in winter, which is when the waves are best.
Why I run it this wayI'm not a surf instructor — I'll get you to the right beach at the right tide and hand you to someone who is. The rest of the trip is mine.
The things worth stopping for
- A first surf lesson with people who teach beginners all year
- Paradise Valley — palm gorge, cold water, no road noise
- Imsouane, where the right-hander runs longer than anywhere else in Morocco
- Argan country, and the goats that climb the trees
Where this trip takes you
Straight lines between stops, not the exact roads — the driving is the winding version of this.
How the trip goes
-
Day 1: North to Taghazout
Driving: About 1 hourOut of Agadir and up the coast road, which is short enough that we can stop wherever the view earns it. Settle into Taghazout, then walk out to the point in the evening to watch whoever's still in the water as the light goes.
-
Day 2: A lesson, then the valley
Driving: About 1 hourMorning surf lesson at Tamraght or Banana Beach, whichever is working — beginner-friendly, sand bottom, an instructor who does this every day. In the afternoon, inland to Paradise Valley: a palm gorge with pools you can swim in and a walk in that keeps most people out.
-
Day 3: Imsouane
Driving: About 1.5 hoursNorth to Imsouane, a fishing village with a harbour on one side and a wave on the other that runs longer than anything else on this coast. Boards if you want them, the quay if you don't — the fish comes off the boats and onto the grill in front of you.
-
Day 4: Argan country and the road south
Driving: About 3 hoursInland through the argan forest — including, if the goats are obliging, the ones standing in the branches. A women's cooperative where the oil is actually pressed rather than just sold, then back down the coast to somewhere quiet for the last night.
-
Day 5: The slow way back
Driving: About 1.5 hoursA last morning in the water or on the sand, then the coast road back into Agadir in time for an afternoon flight.
