A Day in the Ourika Valley
Ourika Valley Day Trip from Marrakech
One day out of Marrakech and into the High Atlas, back before dinner
- 1 day
- Marrakech → Marrakech
- About 3 hours of driving, spread across the whole day. driving
The mountains start forty minutes from Jemaa el-Fna, and most people never see them — they have three days in Marrakech and assume the Atlas needs a week. This is the day I would send my own family on. Up the Ourika valley with the river beside the road the whole way, a stop in a village that has not been arranged for anybody's benefit, lunch somewhere with water running under the table, and back into Marrakech in time for the evening. No dawn start, no long drive, no pressure to be anywhere. If you want to walk, we walk. If you would rather sit by the river for two hours, that is also a good day.
Why I run it this wayOne day is genuinely enough for this valley if you do not waste it. We leave early enough to be ahead of the coaches and move slowly enough that you actually see the place.
The things worth stopping for
- Out of the city and into the mountains inside an hour
- A Berber house where the mint tea isn't a performance
- Setti Fatma, and the walk up towards the waterfalls
- Roadside stops at whatever turns out to be worth stopping for
Where this trip takes you
Straight lines between stops, not the exact roads — the driving is the winding version of this.
How the trip goes
-
Day 1: Up the valley, and back down
Driving: About 3 hours totalWe leave after breakfast — no dawn start, this is not that kind of day. Out through the olive groves and into the foothills, where the road meets the river and follows it up. A stop in a Berber village on the way, then on to Setti Fatma, where you can walk up towards the waterfalls or sit by the water while I wait. Lunch beside the river. The slow way back down with whatever stops you feel like, into Marrakech by late afternoon.
