The Imperial Spine
6-Day Imperial Cities Tour: Casablanca to Marrakech
Six days, Casablanca to Marrakech, four capitals and no desert
- 6 days · 5 nights
- Casablanca → Marrakech
- About 14 hours over 6 days. All paved. driving
Morocco's four imperial capitals in one line, with the Roman ruins and the olive country between them. Rabat's Udayas kasbah, Meknes and its monumental gates, Volubilis, Fes given a full guided day, and Marrakech at the end. Licensed local historians in both Fes and Marrakech, because in those two medinas a good guide is the difference between a walk and an education. The route back south runs past Bin el Ouidane lake rather than down the motorway.
Why I run it this wayFor travellers who want the cities and the history and do not want to spend two days driving to a sand dune. Nobody sells this because everyone assumes the desert is compulsory. It is not.
The things worth stopping for
- All four imperial capitals: Rabat, Meknes, Fes and Marrakech
- The Hassan II mosque on the Atlantic and the Kasbah of the Udayas
- Volubilis, the best-preserved Roman site in North Africa
- A full private guided day in Fes el-Bali with a licensed historian
- Bin el Ouidane's turquoise reservoir on the way south
- Guided heritage walk in Marrakech: Bahia, the Saadian tombs, the souks
