The Happy Valley

Five days in the Ait Bougmez, and the answer to a Moroccan summer

  • 5 days · 4 nights
  • Marrakech → Marrakech
  • About 14 hours over 5 days. driving

Morocco has a summer problem that is really an honesty problem: the desert is unbearable from June to September and most operators keep selling it anyway. The mountains are the answer. Ait Bougmez is a flat green valley of barley terraces and walnut groves, still farmed by hand, on a road that only recently got tarmac. Ouzoud drops a hundred metres in three stages with macaques in the trees beside the path. Short drives, cool nights, two easy walking days, and family guesthouses where you eat what the household eats.

Why I run it this way

The trip for July and August, when the desert is 45 degrees and every other operator is still selling it. Also the answer for anyone who says they do not want to spend a holiday in a vehicle.

What you'll see

The things worth stopping for

  • Ait Bougmez, the valley Moroccans call happy, still quiet
  • Two easy walking days between villages at a normal pace
  • Centuries-old mud granaries and genuine dinosaur footprints in the rock ledges
  • The Sidi Moussa shrine on its conical hill, with the whole valley below
  • Ouzoud falls at first light, before the day-trippers arrive from Marrakech
  • Imi n'Ifri, a giant natural limestone arch over a gorge full of birds
  • Cool at night in the months when the south is unbearable
The route

Where this trip takes you

Straight lines between stops, not the exact roads — the driving is the winding version of this.

Start Marrakech
Day 1 Ait Bougmez
Day 4 Bin el Ouidane
Day 5 Marrakech
Day by day

How the trip goes

  1. Day 1: Marrakech to Ait Bougmez via Ouzoud

    Driving: About 5 hours

North-east to the 110-metre Ouzoud falls, then winding upward into the valley. Settle into a stone gîte. Two nights here.

  2. Day 2: Terraced orchards and dinosaur footprints

    Driving: No driving

A day on foot along the old irrigation channels, with an explanation of how water is shared, which is the entire social system in a set of ditches. Mud granaries, walnut groves, and prehistoric footprints in the village rock.

  3. Day 3: Valley ridges and Sidi Moussa

    Driving: No driving

Up the conical hill to the Sidi Moussa granary for the view down the whole valley floor. Mint tea and bread with a farming family on the way back.

  4. Day 4: Bougmez to Bin el Ouidane

    Driving: About 4 hours

Out of the valley to the turquoise reservoir at Bin el Ouidane, blue water against red rock. An afternoon doing very little, which is permitted.

  5. Day 5: Bin el Ouidane to Marrakech via Imi n'Ifri

    Driving: About 4 hours

Down through Demnate to walk beneath the natural limestone arch at Imi n'Ifri, then back into Marrakech by mid-afternoon.
